Burj Jumeira
Dubai • Mixed-Use
Conceived as the centerpiece of the new SOM-masterplanned Downtown Jumeira mixed-use district in Al Sufouh, Burj Jumeira (also Burj Jumeirah) is a 550-meter / 1,804-foot supertall by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's New York office. The aerodynamic split-volume tower features a large void between two curvilinear masses — a form referencing regional dunes and oases — rising from an oval-shaped pond emblazoned with the fingerprint of Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, encircled by water-feature shops and a terraced outdoor amphitheatre. The façade is to carry an integrated digital display, with a 450-meter sky lounge and sky restaurant and a spherical observation deck evocative of the native Gulf pearl. State-owned Dubai Holding announced the project in January 2019; SOM provides architectural and structural services as well as the surrounding Downtown Jumeira master plan.
